The Kuali Foundation is a non-profit organization that coordinates the efforts of colleges and universities to sustain and evolve a comprehensive suite of administrative software that meets the needs of all Carnegie Class institutions.

Fifty of the nation's information technology (IT) leaders have convened on the IUPUI campus this week to draft a national strategy for coordinating the nation's most advanced IT resources to promote innovation, research productivity, and US global competitiveness. The meeting brings together leaders from two key national organizations - the Coalition for Academic Scientific Computing (CASC) and the EDUCAUSE Committee on Campus Cyberinfrastructure. The workshop will result in a report recommending steps universities can implement collaboratively to accelerate research.

The Kuali Foundation has announced the addition of three new investing partners in the Kuali community. The University of Southern California has become a major new investing partner in the Kuali Student System, and has announced a commitment of $5M to the project. The University of Maryland College Park has become an investing partner in the Kuali Financial Systems. UMCP was already a partner in the Kuali Student System. Finally, the University of California, Davis is the newest investing partner in the Kuali Research Administration Systems. UC Davis has been an investing partner in the Kuali Financial Systems since July 2006.

Indiana high school students with an interest in computer technology, programming, or networking can work side by side with IU technology professionals to build a robot during a hands-on workshop sponsored by the Community Outreach Program of Pervasive Technology Labs (PTL) at Indiana University. Network security researchers from the Advanced Network Management Lab will lead the second annual PTL Summer Technology Workshop, which will introduce teens to the field of high-speed network research and cybersecurity. Using a kit from the LEGO® Mindstorms® series, workshop participants will build a wireless network-controlled robot. The program will introduce terms and concepts relating to network control and security.

University Information Technology Services (UITS) at Indiana University announced today that it has dedicated over 350 terabytes (TB) of new storage platforms to support collaborative research projects mounting the Lustre file system across the TeraGrid network and other national high speed networks. IU's Data Capacitor Project Lead Stephen Simms made the announcement during a panel discussion at the Sun Microsystems-sponsored 2008 Lustre User Group being held this week in Sonoma, California.

The Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and CIO at Indiana University has announced a series of appointments in the leadership team of its Research Technologies division to expand IU's role in advanced information technology and its applications in scholarly discovery and artistic creation. The Research Technologies (RT) division of University Information Technology Services (UITS) at IU supports next generation research through delivery and support of advanced cyberinfrastructure. RT also works to create the cyberinfrastructure of tomorrow through collaboration with IU computer scientists and involvement in national projects such as the TeraGrid and Open Science Grid.

Brad Wheeler, IU vice president for IT and chair of the Kuali Foundation Board of Directors, has announced that Jennifer Foutty has been named Executive Director of the Kuali Foundation. Foutty will lead the Foundation's activities in recruiting new members, coordinating programmatic initiatives, technology development, sharing best practices, and fostering collaboration on behalf of the Kuali community. Foutty has worked at Indiana University for over 20 years with a variety of responsibilities. IU is a founding partner in the Kuali Foundation that develops administrative software for colleges and universities.

Indiana University staff member Debby Allmayer, who serves as the human resources officer for the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and CIO, was honored with the 2008 Indiana University Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Building Bridges Community Award during a ceremony held on the Bloomington campus on January 21. The Building Bridges Award honors members of the community who display the leadership and social consciousness embodied by Dr. King. For many years, Allmayer has contributed greatly to the IU and the Bloomington communities with her steadfast commitment to social justice and outreach.

University Information Technology Services (UITS) Database and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialist Anna Radue was recently elected to the board of directors of Indiana's premier GIS organization. Radue will serve a three-year term on the board of the Indiana Geographic Information Council (IGIC), a nonprofit organization of GIS users, professionals, and educators recognized as the coordinating body for all geographic information in Indiana. At Indiana University, Radue, who is also an IU alumna, provides GIS and remote sensing technical support to all IU campuses throughout the state.

Indiana University technologists will inform some of the nation's top research scientists about advanced cyberinfrastructure at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) being held next month in Boston. IU is sponsoring a tutorial and workshop at the event titled "The TeraGrid: An essential tool for 21st century science" on Sunday, February 17, from 10:30-noon.

In this role, Speelmon will participate in foundation governance and in determining priorities for Sakai's development of open-source course management tools and its related higher education software for teaching, learning, research, and collaborative applications.

The Kuali Foundation is a non-profit organization responsible for sustaining and evolving a comprehensive suite of administrative software that meets the needs of all Carnegie Class institutions. CSU joins 20 other university investing partners including Indiana University. Kuali Financial is based on IU's financial system.

Indiana University is making a large variety of life sciences data available to the US research community via the TeraGrid, through the IU Centralized Life Sciences Data (CLSD) service. The data available via CLSD include amongst others dbSNP, Saccaromyces Genome Database, PubMed, and several NCBI BLAST databases including NT, NR, and SP. US researchers who are interested in making use of this service are invited to contact the IU TeraGrid Research Partner site -- the Research Technologies Division of Indiana University.

University Information Technology Services at IU welcomes Barbara Christe as a new faculty fellow in the development of its collaboration and learning environment, Oncourse CL. Christe, a faculty member at IUPUI since 1998, is associate professor and program director of Biomedical Engineering Technology at the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology. Christe will create a repository of good practices for using Oncourse CL.

Kelley School of Business students, faculty and friends participated in the Eighth Annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, September 29, at the Indiana University Memorial Stadium. The 125 member "Kelley Runs for Walt" Team, the largest Indiana University team for the second year in a row, was organized to celebrate the life of Walt Blacconiere, former Kelley School of Business professor who passed away earlier this year.

As useful as high resolution geographic image data is of the state of Indiana , large file sizes created a barrier for their use. The Indiana Geographic Information Council recently recognized three Indiana University staff members for developing a user-friendly mechanism for downloading multiple files from the Indiana Spatial Data Portal (ISDP), a large repository of Indiana geospatial data. David Heald, database analyst and Stephanie Snider, GIS specialist, both of University Information Technology Services, and Nathan Eaton, information services manager of IU's Indiana Geological Survey, received the Indiana GIS Award during the Council's annual conference.

John Gosney has been appointed as faculty liaison for the Teaching and Learning Information Technology division of University Information Technology Services (UITS). As faculty liaison within UITS' Academic and Faculty Services, Gosney will work with faculty from across Indiana University to explore and advocate the best use of technology to enhance teaching and learning. Gosney comes to his new position having served since 2000 as director of information technology for the IU School of Dentistry.

The recent snow storm may have kept students from attending classes, but Indiana University's IT support infrastructure helped keep students, staff and faculty connected when they could not make the drive to campus. Use of Oncourse CL, the university's online course management system, dominated much of the university community's online activities. On Tuesday, Feb. 13, Oncourse CL received nearly 10.5 million hits—up more than 4 percent from the previous week. What's more, the community downloaded more than 2,700 software packages via IUware on Feb. 13—more than any other day that week. Some staff and faculty kept their scheduled meetings and teleconferenced via a home phone or cell, or responded to requests via email.

Two new appointments within University Information Technology Services (UITS) will enable the consolidation of staff from IUB and IUPUI and leverage their expertise to provide more robust support for teaching and learning on the core campuses and across the University. Beverly Teach has been appointed manager of UITS Classroom Technology Services, and David Donaldson has been appointed manager of UITS Media Design and Production. Reporting to Elizabeth Van Gordon, these managers and their groups will have responsibility for both the IUB and IUPUI campuses and will provide services to other campuses.
