‘Inconvenient Stories’ of Vietnam vets focus of IU Art Museum exhibition
No thinking American alive during the Vietnam War era was untouched by the turbulence of that time. "Inconvenient Stories: Portraits of Vietnam War Veterans" by Jeffrey A. Wolin -- a photography exhibition opening at the Indiana University Art Museum (IUAM) on June 15 -- gives an unflinching account of 50 men and women who fought and lived the war in Vietnam. Indiana University and its Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center will present the ninth annual Juneteenth Freedom Celebration on June 30 in Bloomington. Long celebrated among African Americans, Juneteenth is a day set aside to honor the memory of those who endured slavery and those who progressed from slavery to freedom. In an apartment in Queens, just around the corner from fellow IU graduates, a young woman starts her day with decaffeinated tea. It's good for the throat, she says. In her line of work, keeping one's voice in top shape is crucial. Also important is keeping the body fit. This singer's morning may include a yoga class. She might go to an acting class, or perhaps practice one of the (at least) four instruments she plays. The daytime schedule includes running errands, making calls. Pretty standard stuff, she says. After working together for a year on photography and writing skills, Honors Program students at Indiana University East and second graders at Crestdale Elementary School have displayed their work through June 29 in a gallery exhibit reflecting their project, "Literacy through Photography." Through the project, students were motivated to express themselves in writing and speaking, to look at the world more closely, to learn more about each other, and to foster creativity, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. One of Indiana University's most important artistic, cultural, and historical treasures is currently on exhibit in Images of Native Americans: The Wanamaker Collection at the Mathers Museum of World Cultures. This renowned collection features more than 8,000 images taken between 1908 and 1923, and is recognized as the largest and one of the most important collections of photographs of Native Americans by a single photographic enterprise in the United States.
