Obesity through the lens of science

Researchers from several disciplines will bring an academic focus to the growing problem of childhood and adolescent obesity with a conference Sept. 4-5 at Indiana University Bloomington. The conference, titled "Cognitive, Behavioral and Economic Approaches to Childhood and Adolescent Obesity," will feature presentations by internationally known experts from the fields of economics, nutrition, marketing, biostatistics and exercise.   Full Story >>

Annual youth drug use survey sees overall decline, IDs areas of concern

Overall youth drug use by sixth through 12th graders in Indiana is down, according to the latest annual survey by the Indiana Prevention Resource Center (IPRC) at Indiana University Bloomington's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. IPRC Director Ruth Gassman said the survey results can help communities with needs assessments, planning prevention programs, evaluation of initiatives and assembling grant applications.   Full Story >>

Forever Olympians: IU ties to the Olympic Games

Students, alumni, coaches and staff from Indiana University will be performing in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing this month. "The moment I found out I won the Olympic trials I was so overwhelmed with emotion," said Christina Loukas, a senior in IU's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation who will be competing in the 3-meter springboard. "I had tears of joy when I realized I had finally done it. I just kept thinking to myself, 'I am forever an Olympian now,' which is just crazy for me to think about. I think about all the amazing Olympic athletes who are classified as the best in the world and it is such an honor to be part of that now."   Full Story >>
